GTA 6 lands on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on 19 November 2026, and the question we get most often is still the same one: is a PS6 close enough to be worth waiting for? The honest way to answer that is to separate what Sony has actually said, on the record, from the leak cycle that surrounds every console generation. This post collects the official statements only, in date order, with links. Everything else on the topic sits in our clearly labelled PS6 release date and PS6 price trackers.

The short answer

As of 25 October 2026, Sony has not announced the PlayStation 6. There is no name reveal, no release date, no price and no specification sheet. Sony's chief executive has said twice this year that the company has not decided when to launch its next console or what to charge for it. Confirmed

The statements, in order

October 2025: "a future console in a few years' time"

In a video on the official PlayStation channel, lead system architect Mark Cerny and AMD's Jack Huynh talked about Project Amethyst, a joint Sony and AMD effort on machine learning for graphics. Cerny described three technologies (Neural Arrays, Radiance Cores and Universal Compression) and said they "only exist in simulation right now", adding that he was excited about bringing them "to a future console in a few years' time". He did not name a PS6 or give a year. Many outlets read "a few years" as pointing beyond 2027, but that is interpretation, not a date. (VGC report)

27 March 2026: the PS5 gets more expensive, not cheaper

Sony announced new recommended prices for PS5 hardware, effective 2 April 2026. In the US the PS5 moved to $649.99, the Digital Edition to $599.99 and the PS5 Pro to $899.99, with matching rises in the UK, Europe and Japan. Sony cited "continued pressures in the global economic landscape". This matters for the PS6 question because it shows the cost environment Sony is planning its next console in. (PlayStation Blog)

8 May 2026: "not yet decided" on timing or price

During Sony's full-year results, CEO Hiroki Totoki was asked about the next console. As reported by VGC and Screen Rant, he said Sony had "not yet decided on what timing [it] will launch the new console, or at what prices", that it would "really observe and follow the situation", and that it was considering "various simulations, including changing business models". Component costs were expected to stay high through the fiscal year. (Screen Rant summary)

1 July 2026: no more discs for new games from January 2028

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that physical disc production will end for all new games released on PlayStation consoles from January 2028. Sid Shuman, senior director of content communications, called it "a natural direction" in line with consumer trends. Sony did not connect the decision to a PS6, and games released on disc before the cutoff are not affected. (Gematsu, TechCrunch)

August 2026: still no launch date

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, reported by Push Square on 17 August 2026, Totoki indicated that a PS6 release date has still not been set. No price, specs or reveal plans were given. (Push Square)

What is not on this list

You will see confident claims about a codename ("Orion"), Zen 6 and RDNA 5 parts, a $500 to $950 price band, a 2027 or 2028 launch and a "Project Canis" handheld. None of those came from Sony. They come from leakers, patent filings and analyst models. We still track them, because people search for them, but on our PS6 specs and PS6 handheld pages they carry a Leak / rumour label and a source date.

What it means if you want to play GTA 6

Put the official record next to the one fixed date and the decision gets simpler:

  • GTA 6 is confirmed for 19 November 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S (Take-Two, 24 June 2026). Pre-orders opened on 25 June, digital pre-load starts on 12 November, and the boxed edition contains a download code rather than the game on a disc. Confirmed
  • Sony itself says it has not picked a PS6 date or price. Anyone telling you to "wait a few months for the PS6" is guessing.
  • Console hardware got more expensive in 2026, not cheaper, and Sony has said component costs remain a factor. Waiting is not a reliable way to save money.

If you are weighing a PS5, a PS5 Pro or holding out, our PS5 Pro or wait for PS6 guide walks through each path, and our second post this week looks at whether a GTA 6 copy bought now will play on a PS6.

How we will update this

When Sony makes the next on-the-record statement, a reveal, a date or a price, we will add it here with the date and source and move the matching items on the GTA 6 PS6 news log from the rumour column to the confirmed one.
